CRIStin reporting for 2015 - 34 entries

Today I made registrations of academic activities in 2015 in CRIStin, the Current Research Information System In Norway. 34 activities altogether, down 2 from 2014. In total I have made 120 registrations since I started reporting to Cristin in 2012.

I expect 2,80 publication points for 2015. It could have been 1 more, if I had remembered to propose Chinese Semiotic Studies as a publication channel within the deadline November 30th last year (I thought I did).

Here is my profile in CRIStin.

* Head of Department of Media, Culture and Social Sciences
* Dean of Faculty of Social Studies

I have a history of employment at the first two departments, and have had students from the third (which furthermore fits my research profile quite well).

Also, I have registered for the university´s PRE-FRIPRO program this year too - but will only take part in the last workshop, April 14th, where I will present my revised application for a (critical) panel.

New office

Today I have moved from one office (KA 215) to another (KA-U-112) in Kjell Arholms hus, at University of Stavanger´s Ullandhaug campus. My new office is located in a so-called "office landscape" (no roof, thin "walls" ... so must be quite silent). Meeting rooms are available nearby, though.

Synchronicity in human perception of animals
Abstract
By Morten Tønnessen, Associate professor of philosophy, University of Stavanger, Norway

Part of the panel "Phenomenological Approaches to the Anthropological Difference”, convened by Cristian Ciocan

This paper presents findings from 13 video-recorded interviews conducted Spring 2015 in Norway focused on the respondents´ perception of wolves and related animals which are often perceived to be in conflict with wolves. The interviews were conducted in the rural municipalities Kautokeino (Finnmark county) and Rendalen (Hedmark county), and the urban municipalities Stavanger (Rogaland county) and Kristiansand (Vest-Agder county). In the interviews, the respondents were shown images, video-clips and audio featuring wolves, elk, dogs, sheep, reindeer and people, and prompted to explain what they saw and/or heard. In the course of these verbal explanations, accompanied by telling body language, it becomes clear how the respondents sought to interpret the media material and e.g. determine the species of featured animals, or understand the situation on display.

I will demonstrate different ways in which human perception of animals is synchronized, and show examples involving simultaneous display of multiple screens and video-recordings. A study of synchronicity in human perception of animals can reveal patterns and tendencies in such perception, and inform us about the respondents´ identity, attitudes and self-understanding. By making use of parameters including geography, demography (gender, age etc.), occupation and hobbies, this study sheds light on the ways in which human self-understanding is always based in part on our ideas about, and perception of, animals.

Acknowledgements: This work has been carried out thanks to the support of the research project Animals in Changing Environments: Cultural Mediation and Semiotic Analysis (EEA Norway Grants/Norway Financial Mechanism 2009-2014 under project contract no. EMP151). Paul Thibault took part in designing and conducting the interviews; Laura Kiiroja contributed by cataloguing the video-recorded interviews.

Now i10 index of 3 in Google Scholar, 99 citations

In Google Scholar (see my profile), I am now listed with 99 citations, an i10 index of 3 and a h-index of 5. This implies that 3 of my publications have been cited at least 10 times, and that 5 (actually, 7) of my articles have been cited 5 times each.

The count presented by Google Scholar is not entirely accurate, since it on one hand includes several self-citations, and on another does not include several citations I have found through other channels.

The figure below shows the number of citations by year in Google Scholar, with 2015 representing a peak so far with 36 citations.

The third article to reach 10 citations, after "Umwelt ethics" (2003, now 20) and "Umwelt transitions: Uexküll and environmental change" (2009, now 16), was "Steps to a semiotics of being" (2010).
