Letter to the editor and news story published in Khrono

Today a letter to the editor of mine, «Høyskolevisjonen» for UiS, has been published in Khrono, a Norwegian higher education online news outlet.

An opinion piece I wrote today, "Hvor grønt har Universitetet i Stavanger blitt?" (in reply to Harald N. Røstvik´s opinion piece "Er UIS fortsatt "Oljeuniversitetet i Stavanger"?") has been published in Khrono.

Accreditation application approved by UIS board

Today the board of the University of Stavanger has unanimously decided to approve the accreditation application for the ph.d. program in social sciences, which I am leading in my capacity as Vice Dean of Research at Faculty of social sciences. The reorganized programme, with five research schools, will be in effect from tomorrow.

UiS action plan for ethical trading 2017-21 approved

On December 1st, the board of University Stavanger had a board meeting where in case US 109/16 issues settled by rector Marit Boyesen were reported. On November 22nd she, by mandate, approved of the action plan for ethical trading 2017-2021 (RF 41/16) that I have helped prepare as a member of the UiS work group on ethical trading. The plan also includes a procurement strategy.

Stepping down as 2nd deputy member of board of UiS

Since the Autumn of 2013, I have been 2nd deputy member of the board of the University of Stavanger (and Autumn 2012 to Spring 2013 I was permanent member of the board) representing temporarily employed education and research staff. Since I am starting August 1st 2016 permanently employed at University Stavanger, I will step down as 2nd deputy member of the University of Stavanger.

UiS to have employed rector

The board of the University of Stavanger has today decided that starting in 2019, the university´s rector will be employed, not elected. This weakens organizational democracy and academic autonomy. 4 out of 11 members of the board voted against the change.

Petition for continued organizational democracy at University of Stavanger

I have signed a petition that calls for continued organizational democracy at University of Stavanger. The board is to decide June 8th on a range of structural issues, including whether the university should have elected or employed rector, and whether or not there should be  faculty and department boards.

New Dean, Head of departments announced

Yesterday the board of University of Stavanger made decisions on new Head of departments at Department of health studies, Department of media, culture and social sciences (see link to news story), and dean of Faculty of social sciences. The names have been announced to employees today. In the case of Department of social studies, there will be another call for applications.

I applied for all four positions, and was interviewed and considered a serious candidate in relation to Department of social studies and Department of media, culture and social sciences.

Second day of UiS board seminar attended

Today I have attended the second day of the seminar of the board of the University of Stavanger, at Sola Strandhotell. The 2-day event concluded by lunchtime. A lot of interesting people.

Today I have attended the board meeting of University of Stavanger (as an observer), and the first day of the board´s 2-day seminar. Both events took place at Sola Strandhotell.

As reported in the post below, 11 votes got me a 2nd deputy position only representing temporarily employed education and research staff. The news story provides info on who were elected in each category of employment, and how many votes each candidate got.

Another election for the UiS board lost

Today the election for the board of University of Stavanger ended, and the results have been communicated to candidates. Among temporarily employed education and research staff, I got 11 of 71 votes not including blank votes, or in other words 15% of the votes. This makes me 2nd deputy representative in the board 0101.2016-31.07.2017, given that there were three candidates and that I came in 3rd place.

Øyvind Foss, former pro-rector at the Stavanger University College (the precursor to UiS), recently posted the debate article "Morten Tønnessen bør velges til UiS styret" [Morten Tønnessen should be elected to the UiS board] at the University of Stavanger´s debate pages. I really appreciate his endorsement.

Debate on research productivity - UiS board elections

A couple of days ago I posted "Vi må ha ambisjoner for forskningen!" [We need ambitions for research!] on the University of Stavanger debate pages, in reply to a post by Svein Tuastad, "59 poeng" [59 [publication] points]. Yesterday he replied, with the post "Kulturforklaringa" [the culture explanation].

Three UiS election-related open meetings attended

On November 18th, Wednesday this week, I attended all three open meetings at University of Stavanger in relation to the upcoming elections of representatives for the UiS board. While I was an attendee only during the meetings for permanent scientific staff and administrative staff, I was one of the candidates presented during the meeting for temporarily employed education and research staff. Attendance varied from ca. 25 during the other two meetings, to 9 during "my" meeting.

Debate article: Where now for the University of Stavanger?

I have just composed the debate article Hvor nå for UiS? [Where now for the University of Stavanger?], which has been posted on the debate pages of UiS. Amongst other things I write that UiS should in the future be organized as an independent foundation rather than as a public university under the government.

Here is the official UiS news story presenting (or rather listing) the candidates for the board of University of Stavanger. Open meetings where the candidates will present their electoral programs will be held on Wednesday November 18th. The meeting for temporarily employed education and research staff will be held at noon.
