Publication points 2023 - #6 at department; #2 among professors

I have just looked at the publication points results at my department and faculty for 2023. With 3,4 publication points, from 2 journal articles and 2 book chapters, I rank as #6 at University of Stavanger´s Department of social studies in terms of publication points overall, and #2 among professors employed at the department.

With 5,1 publication points, Sarah Hean (professor of social work) had the most publication points among the professors of the department. With 6,5 publication points, Francesco Margoni (associate professor of psychology) did best by this measure overall.

(Skimpy) conference plans for 2024 due to UIS budget cuts

I will not have the opportunity to attend all the conferences I would like, and have attended the previous years, this year - at least not physically - due to a lack of funding. My employer University of Stavanger (UIS) will only cover one conference participation this year, whereas I have had ca. 3-5 funded per year the last few years - a quite drastic change for me. As a professor, and a researcher who has at some points in the last few years been the most active at my faculty (Faculty of social sciences) regarding international conference presentations, I find this development worrisome - I feel I do not get the funding and support I need to do my job as well as I can. Some of these events it seems I can attend digitally, but I know from experience that that is not the same thing as attending physically.

I applied for external funding for conference participation from Nansenfondet, but have now been notified I did not get any funding.

I will now have to tell the organizers of the world congress of semiotics, in Poland, that I will not be able to attend, despite being a member of the world congress´ scientific committee. Moreover, I will have to attend the Gathering in biosemiotics, in South Africa, and  the world congress in environmental history, in Finland, digitally in stead of physically.

Advice given to Dean on 10 research group applications

Over the last few weeks I have given advice to the Dean of the Faculty of social sciences at University of Stavanger regarding 10 research group applications, as a replacement for the Vice Dean for Research, over three meetings, the last of which today. The process results in the allocation of about 300.000 NOK divided between the research groups this year and the same amount in 2025.

Research leave application declined

Yesterday I was notified by the Faculty of Social Sciences that my research leave application for the academic year 2024-25, which I would have used to finish my book project Captured: CCS and the fight for the soul of the environmental movement, has been declined.

Today, on my third last day as Head of department, I have attended 3 meetings, including my last faculty leadership group meeting and my final department council meeting.

6th most publishing researcher at Faculty of social sciences in 2021

According to the forthcoming research report of the faculty, I was the 6th most-publishing researcher at Faculty of social sciences in 2021, with 6,6 publication points. The scientific publications that counted in this regard were one co-authored book (Semiotic agency: Science beyond mechanism) and two journal articles. I was the third most-publishing scholar from Department of social studies.

Today I have attended the first faculty leadership group meeting in a long time - the last before the summer - and 4 employee appraisals (total this week 11, total to date 63).

Today I have watched half a webinar and attended 2 scheduled meetings, including the first meeting this year of Norway´s Council for animal ethics (digital attendance).

Today I have had 4 scheduled meetings. This included the faculty leadership group meeting, and the Spring´s second department leadership group meeting. All meetings have been digital since I currently work from home with covid.

2 meetings and a fagdag

Today I have attended 2 scheduled meetings and followed most of the faculty´s "Fagdag" (academic day), which had the theme work life relevance.

Today I have attended 2 scheduled meetings. This included a work meeting devoted to working out program for a 2-day bachelor gathering at the department. Today I also follow a welfare seminar by Network for welfare research digitally.

Today I have attended 3 scheduled meetings. This included the weekly faculty leadership group meeting, and the Autumn´s third and last staff meeting, where among other things we discussed revision of the department´s action plan.

A meeting and a Fagforum

Today I have attended the weekly faculty leadership group meeting, and chaired the Autumn´s fourth and last Fagforum at the department, featuring Christian Børge Sørensen.
