My article "Wasted GDP in the USA" is referenced in the news story "Can ‘degrowth’ solve our ecological, social & economic problems?" by Mike DiGirolamo and Rachel Donald which was published on the international environmental issues news site Mongabay on January 30th, along with a podcast featuring economist Timothée Parrique, who is currently based at Lund University, Sweden. In the podcast, Timothée talks about my research around 18m30s - 21m40s, and later on, around 59m - 1h05m, Mike and Rachel discuss it.

Recent research indicates that the United States wastes 65% of its economic output on things that do not provide essential or quality-of-life needs, bolstering the argument that the economy could be strongly scaled back to decrease its impact on the environment. 

Research published in the journal Humanities and Social Sciences Communications finds that just in the United States, trillions of dollars are wasted on things that do not improve the quality of life for Americans. Podcast guest Timothée Parrique, an economist and researcher at the Lund University School of Economics and Management, argues this is strong evidence that the United States (and other wealthy, industrialized nations) could significantly scale back production and consumption, thereby decreasing their impact on the planet’s stretched ecological limits — the Planetary Boundaries — allowing low- and middle-income nations the latitude they need to raise their standards of living.

News story on Arendalsuka panel discussion on animal welfare in agriculture in Bondebladet

In this week´s issue of Bondebladet, there is a news story, "Fortsatt stor avstand mellom produsent og forbruker" (pay wall), covering the panel discussion held during Arendalsuka last week, «Kan norsk landbruk tilby et liv verdt å leve?» The news story includes a paragraph on some of my statements on animal welfare. 

Chronicle in Nationen on so-called pest species

Today the chronicle "Burde vi behandle skadedyr bedre?", written by me and Knut Bøe on behalf of Norway´s Council for animal ethics, has been published online in the Norwegian national daily newspaper Nationen. The chronicle is based on a recent consultative statement that I co-authored.

Radio - comments on the vulnerability of our modern monetary economy

As announced yesterday, I appeared on NRK P1 Sørlandet, a public regional Norwegian radio channel, this morning, concerning a bank strike which eventually did not materialize. Nevertheless June 6th - yesterday - was a historical day, as Norwegians have never withdrawn as much cash as yesterday on one and the same day. My perspective on a possible bank strike was threefold:

a) how we have come to depend on our monetary economy, and in effect spread this dependence globally through our development/aid policy (because we regard cultures without monetary economy as uncivilized)
b) how people deal with such modern shocks, being creative when in need (though such flexibility is more achievable in many 'less developed' economies, which are, ironically, less vulnerable in this respect)
c) the ways in which a contemporary bank strike would hit society compared to earlier bank strikes (e.g. 1976), illustrating our increased dependence on monetary economy and technology in our modern economy of scale

I was introduced as philosopher with master (hovedfag) in philosophy and a PhD underway in semiotics.

On radio tomorrow morning - philosophy of banking

Tomorrow at 7.40 a.m. Norwegian time I will be on NRK Sørlandet radio commenting the bank strike that might start tomorrow morning, from a philosophical perspective. Regional media coverage - the Southern wolf

Tuesday November 23rd I was featured in the regional Norwegian newspaper Fædrelandsvennen under the heading "Vil gi ulven plass i Agder" [Wants to give the wolf space in Agder]. Whole page, including excerpts from the daily's online debate and a comment from Helge Fossen, a NGO representative.

The journalist Tarald Reinholt Aas generously allowed me to publish the uncut version of the interview text in my Norwegian language blog Utopisk Realisme. There I have further posted a reply to Helge Fossen ("Hva er en sau verdt?" [How much is a sheep worth?]).
