Today I have had a writing day, the 7th so far this Spring, devoted to various tasks including some work on my book project Captured: CCS and the fight for the soul of the environmental movement, reporting of scientific publications from 2023, and a little initial work on my article "Applied Umwelt theory – in the context of descriptive phenomenology and phenomenological triangulation", with some 100 words written.

MEE140 grading and grade reporting

Today I have graded 5 papers from the home exam of "Philosophy of science and research methods" (MEE140), and reported grades also on behalf of two other examiners, altogether involving some 54 exam papers.

Philosophy and subjectivity - input to report and renewal application

Today I have compiled input to the report so far of the UiS program area for research "Filosofi og subjektivitet", in relation to our application for renewal of the program area.

COST progress report mentioning ethics of laying hen genetics article

GroupHouseNet has compiled and submitted a progress report at 24 months. The report makes reference to the ethics of laying hen genetics article that is in process written by Mia Fernyhough, me and three more.

Work plan drafted, revised; research reported and planned

I have just revised my current work plan for the academic year 2017-18, drafted a work plan for 2018-19, and compiled a report for research activities for 2017-18 and plan for 2018-19, in preparation of performance appraisal with my Head of department next week.

CRIStin info for four ZfS articles updated

I have updated publication info in CRIStin, regarding publication year and page numbers for my four contributions to the special issue of Zeitschrift für Semiotik on biosemiotic ethics that is appearing this spring.

Academic reporting related to EMP151

The last week I reported academic research activities to the Estonian science agency ETAG and to the Estonian Research Information System (ETIS), in relation to our project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151).

NSD response

Today I have received response to my brief status report from NSD - Norwegian Centre for Research Data in relation to our field work involving 13 interviews last year, acknowledging the prolongation of the subproject which I reported.

2015 EMP151 report edited

Last Friday I did some editing in the 2015 report of activities for the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151), for which I am the Norwegian Project Leader. Overall it was a good year. The report has now been submitted.

Grant reporting of academic activities for 2015

Today I have completed reporting activities in 2015 in relation to the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151). I have also coordinated the reporting from other members of the Norwegian research group, and the Norwegian reporting of financial accounts.

CRIStin reporting for 2015 - 34 entries

Today I made registrations of academic activities in 2015 in CRIStin, the Current Research Information System In Norway. 34 activities altogether, down 2 from 2014. In total I have made 120 registrations since I started reporting to Cristin in 2012.

I expect 2,80 publication points for 2015. It could have been 1 more, if I had remembered to propose Chinese Semiotic Studies as a publication channel within the deadline November 30th last year (I thought I did).

Norwegian Animal Ethics Conference 2014 report compiled

Yesterday I finished and submitted the final report for the Norwegian Animal Ethics Conference 2014 (Dyreetikkonferansen 2014) to Dag S. Stiansens stiftelse, which funded the conference via Minding Animals Norway, one of the organisers.

In the very beginning of February I reported 2014 activities to the research project "Animals in Changing Environments: Cultural Mediation and Semiotic Analysis" (EMP151).

Another round of contributions to 2014 grant report

Yesterday I contributed, in a second round, to the annual grant report for 2014 for the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151), for which I am the Norwegian project leader. The report of activities stands at around 18 pp, plus appendices.

Academic reporting 2014 - CRIStin; estimate of 2014 publication points

Yesterday and (literally) last night I registered academic activities in 2014 in CRIStin, the Current Research information System in Norway (see my profile, with information from 2012 onwards). I made 36 registrations in total, of these 5 concern academic publications that will be included in the publication point system. For 2014 I should have an estimated 3,7 publication points (vs. 3,1 in 2014). The reporting also includes conference presentations and other talks, and media appearances including interviews.

36 registrations in a year is up 6 from 2013 (when I did not register chronicles and letters to the editor). Based on data from previous years, his likely accounts for at least 1% of the registrations from University of Stavanger.

In total I have for these three last years made 87 registrations in CRIStin.

457 posts in 2014

In 2014, as many as 457 posts appeared in this blog, Utopian Realism. The previous record, from 2013, was 286. I have posted more than 100 times a year since 2009. The blog - or rather academic log - was established in 2008.

Despite the frantic activity last year, I still have a considerable backlog of activities to report.

As part of my reporting of 2013 activities related to the research project Dynamical Zoosemiotics and Animal Representations, I have added two contributions to abstract books and a report to my profile in the Estonian Research Information System, ETIS.

Academic reporting 2013 - CRIStin

A couple of days ago I reported my publications, conference presentations and media appearances in 2013 to CRIStin, Current Research Information System In Norway. My reporting, which sorts under University of Stavanger, included 30 activities (vs. 18 in 2012), namely

• Eleven academic publications (three of them co-written) including a co-edited book, book chapters, a preface, journal articles, and two book reviews
• One report
• Seven scientific presentations in international conferences/seminars/workshops
• Two guest lectures
• Eight media appearances (interviews)

Up to 6 of the publications will count in the Norwegian publication point system.

6th most-publishing scholar at Department of Health Studies

UiS board meeting: Reports and plans; study portfolio development; plagiarism

Last Thursday I attended the board meeting of the University of Stavanger (UiS), the second board meeting this year. Issues discussed included reporting for 2012 and plans for 2013 (to the Ministry of Education and Research, which is the owner of UiS) and development of the study portfolio. In the latter case the university director did not get the board's explicit approval to implement seven measures aiming at centralising the management of the study portfolio (though several of them have broad support and will and should be carried out). I was part of presenting alternative proposals for decisions in both cases; the first, proposed with Fredrik Skår (representative for permanent administrative staff), triggered substantial debate about whether or not the board should prioritise what parameters to pay special attention to, but eventually lost the vote 10 to 1, the second, proposed with Eva Hærem (deputy representative for permanent scientific staff), was eventually withdrawn when rector Marit Boyesen and the university director John Møst took a time-out and then in their revised proposal removed the reference to the seven concrete measures, which included establishing a work group that would make suggestions about what studies to close down.
