To share experiences on EEA funding info day at UiS

I have agreed to give a brief presentation of my experiences with EEA research funding at University of Stavanger´s upcoming EØS funding info day May 3rd. This concerns my role as Norwegian project leader for the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis".

"Animals in changing environments" research project formally closed at UiS

The Norwegian part of the EEA research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" has now been officially closed at the University of Stavanger administration. The final payment from our Estonian partner came a week or two ago.

Final conference of Estonian-Norwegian research programme attended in Harju, Estonia

Today and yesterday I have attended the final, concluding conference of the Estonian-Norwegian research programme. Representatives of some 13 bilateral research projects have been present, including Timo Maran and myself from ours, "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis". The conference was held on Laulasmaa Spa Hotel in Harju quite close to Tallinn.

My registration for the concluding conference of the Norwegian-Estonian Research Cooperation has been confirmed. The conference will occur at September 21-22nd at Laulasmaa Spa and Conference Hotel.

Popular scientific summary of field work prepared

The last week or so I have prepared a 7 page PDF document with text, images and links that sums up field work on people´s perception of wolves and related animals carried out at various locations in Norway in Spring 2015 as part of the project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis", specifically the subproject "Representations (both Problematic and Romanticizing) of Large Mammals, especially Wolves". The document will be distributed and made publicly available shortly.

Estonian webpage of "Animals in changing environments" updated

The Estonian webpage (in English) of the Norwegian-Estonian Research Cooperation Programme grant EMP151 "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" has been updated with further information, summing up research done in the project.

"The semiotics of predation and the nature of human beings" presented at UiS research seminar

On Friday December 16th, in the 4th and final Norwegian research seminar of the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis", at University of Stavanger, I presented my paper "The semiotics of predation and the nature of human beings".

The 4th and final Norwegian research seminar of the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" was organised at University of Stavanger December 15-16th. 7 of the 9 scheduled talks were held, as two researchers cancelled their participation in the last minute.

Yesterday five Estonian researchers arrived for the 4th and final Norwegian research seminar of the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis", which takes place today and tomorrow at University of Stavanger.

4th Norwegian EMP151 research seminar to be held December 15-16 at UiS

The 4th and final Norwegian research seminar of the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" will be held at University of Stavanger December 15-16th. A program, which will include presentations by nine researchers, will appear online soon.

2016 project budget

Recently I have organised, by help of an accountant/economist, the 2016 budget for the Norwegian part of the Norwegian-Estonian research project "Animals in changing environments" (EMP151). There was some uncertainty concerning the calculation of overhead related to the 2015 conference "Animals in the Anthropocene", but this has now been resolved, so I know how much funds are left to use by New Year.

Last Friday I did some editing in the 2015 report of activities for the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151), for which I am the Norwegian Project Leader. Overall it was a good year. The report has now been submitted.

Grant reporting of academic activities for 2015

Today I have completed reporting activities in 2015 in relation to the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151). I have also coordinated the reporting from other members of the Norwegian research group, and the Norwegian reporting of financial accounts.

"Animals in changing environments" featured in RCN slide show on EEA research projects

In the news story "1 milliard til EØS-forskning [1 billion for EEA research]", the Research Council of Norway sums up its experience so far with 145 bilateral research projects carried out in collaboration between researchers in Norway and five East-European countries - the Czech republic, Estonia, Latvia, Poland and Romania. A complete list of all 145 projects is available here.

In Estonian-Norwegian cooperation, altogether there are 12 partner institutions involved, and 73 researchers. An embedded slide show features "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151), for which I am the Norwegian project leader, as an example of an Estonian-Norwegian project (on slide 38, see below).

2014 activities of project "Animals in changing environments" well received

The 2014 activities of the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151) have been positively reviewed. The reviewer states the project has involved "a wealth of activities" and that it is "an excellent and well managed project".

Grant dinner in Stavanger

On Thursday June 4th, the Norwegian research group of the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151) had its annual dinner out, at Kitchen & Table, in connection with the 3rd Norwegian EMP151 research seminar, held at University of Stavanger. Riin Magnus was visiting from Tartu.

In the afternoon of Friday June 5th, at University of Stavanger, the Norwegian research group of the project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" held a grant meeting, which I chaired.
