NSD approves project extension

The use of research data in the subproject of EMP151 "Animals in changing environments" called "Representations both Problematic and Romanticizing of Large Mammals especially Wolves" has been extended for a 6 month period until the end of June. Articles are still in process.

Popular scientific summary of field work prepared

The last week or so I have prepared a 7 page PDF document with text, images and links that sums up field work on people´s perception of wolves and related animals carried out at various locations in Norway in Spring 2015 as part of the project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis", specifically the subproject "Representations (both Problematic and Romanticizing) of Large Mammals, especially Wolves". The document will be distributed and made publicly available shortly.

Dissemination article published by ScienceNordic.com in 2016

The research dissemination article "Researchers: Facts alone are not enough in the debate about wolves", by Benedicte Pentz, appeared on ScienceNordic.com on May 7th 2016. The article features an interview with me on field work carried out in Spring 2015. Similar articles have appeared on uis.no, phys.org and forskning.no.

NSD status report on research data

I have just submitted a brief status report to NSD - Norwegian Centre for Research Data in relation to our field work involving 13 interviews last year.

Two final field work interviews conducted

Today and yesterday Paul Thibault and I have conducted the final two interviews in the subproject "Representations (both Problematic and Romanticizing) of Large Mammals, especially Wolves" in the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis", in Stavanger, at University of Stavanger. This brings the total number of interviews up to 13. We now have some 10 hours of video recordings (plus footage from a second camera).

11th interview

Today my collaborator Paul Thibault and I have conducted a fourth video-recorded interview in Rendalen - at Åkrestrømmen. This brings the total numbers of interviews in the subproject "Representations of Large Mammals especially Wolves" (part of the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis") up to 11, after 3 of 5 field works have been conducted.

Today, along with my collaborator Paul Thibault, I´ve conducted three interviews in Rendalen, Hedmark, as part of the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis", specifically the subproject "Representations of Large Mammals especially Wolves". This brings the total so far up to 10 interviews, and some 8-9 hours of video recordings.

Three field trips arranged

The last few days I have arranged field trips (travel, accommodation) to Koppang/Rendalen (May 13-16), Moss (May 27-30) and Stavanger (June 2-5) in relation to the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis", more specifically the subproject "Representations (both Problematic and Romanticizing) of Large Mammals, especially Wolves". Paul Thibault and I will conduct video-recorded interviews (which are consequently to be catalogued by Laura Kiiroja).

So far we have conducted a pilot study and a field trip to Kautokeino.

Kautokeino achievements

These last two days in Kautokeino Paul Thibault and I have conducted three video-recorded interviews. This brings the total so far up to seven (including the pilot study in Kristiansand), and 4-5 hours of recordings.

We have also stopped by at The International Centre for Reindeer Husbandry, the reindeer department (Reindriftsavdelingen) at Fylkesmannen i Finnmark, Kautokeino, and the Sami college and reindeer school. We have been based at the Sami university college, Sámi Allaskuvla (in the science building, Diehtosiida in Sami), with the help of its research coordinator Ville Söderbaum.

Trip to Kautokeino

Today I have travelled Kristiansand-Kautokeino as part of a research visit which will last until Thursday. I am here to do interviews, with Paul Thibault, in the project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis".

Field trip dates rescheduled

Today I met with my colleague Paul Thibault to reschedule field trip dates for our work related to human perception of wolves and related animals, in the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151), specifically the case study "Representations (both Problematic and Romanticizing) of Large Mammals, especially Wolves". The field trips will take place in April, May and June.

Norway´s Data Protection Official for Research (Personvernombudet for forskning) has registered the   interviews in the subproject "Representations (both Problematic and Romanticizing) of Large Mammals, especially Wolves" of the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EMP151) with (NSD) project number 41062. I am registered as contact person/responsible.

Today Paul Thibault and I conducted the pilot study of the subproject "Representations of Large Mammals, especially Wolves" partaking in the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in Changing Environments: Cultural Mediation and Semiotic Analysis" (EMP151), at University of Agder, with 4 respondents/interviewees.

Pilot study rescheduled

The pilot study (see previous posts) which is to be conducted in relation to field work in the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis", specifically as part of the case study “Representations (both Problematic and Romanticizing) of Large Mammals, especially Wolves”, has been rescheduled from January 9th to February 10th. The pilot study will take place at University of Agder.

The reason for the delay is first of all that we have not received a reply from Personvernombudet for forskning [the privacy ombudsman for research] in time - though we now know a reply letter is on its way. We applied some 30 days ago.

Display material selected for EMP151 pilot study

Friday last week we finished selecting display material for the pilot study planned for January 9th 2015 at University of Agder in the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (see a recent post). The display material includes audio, images and video clips.

Pilot study: Interview guide composed; notification form submitted

About a week ago, the last time I took part in work preparing an upcoming pilot study (see yesterday´s post), we submitted a notification form to NSD´s Database for statistikk om høgre utdanning [Database for Statistics on Higher Education (DBH) - Norway], after having finished composing an interview guide (4 pp.) and an information letter.

The pilot study will take place at University of Agder on January 9th.

Equipment to be used in wolf-related field work bought

The last couple of weeks or so I have bought practically all of the equipment that is to be bought in the Norwegian part of the Norwegian-Estonian research project "Animalsin changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" (EEA Norway Grants EMP151). This includes a video camera and a digital camera with accessories, and a laptop, all of which will be used in the case study "Representations (Both Problematic and Romanticizing) of Large Mammals, Especially Wolves".
