Popular science chronicle on life on and in Earth catching on online

My popular science chronicle on life on and in Earth which was published in Forskersonen at forskning.no yesterday (see yesterday´s post) has done quite well online, with close to 500 likes and 50 shares on Facebook. It also appears to be the third most read text right now in Forskersonen (though not at forskning.no generally).

Invited reflections on art exhibition online in English and Norwegian

My invited reflections on the arts exhibition "New Eden?" (Article biennial 2016, Sølvberget galleri, Stavanger - Norway) are available online in Norwegian and in English. They are referred to under Article biennial news (in Norwegian and English). The English version of the text is also linked to from the Facebook page of i/o lab.

Dissemination article on perceptions of wolves published on phys.org

On December 8th, the dissemination story "People's experience of wildlife predators must be highlighted in the debate about them" by Benedicte Pentz was published by phys.org, a science, research and technology news website. As of today the article, which summarises field work on human perceptions of wolves and related animals, has 273 likes on Facebook. 

This is the English version of a dissemination article which has previously appeared in Norwegian.

Facebook ad campaign for panel on the Anthropocene

Last week I set up a Facebook ad campaign for an event under the Norwegian language Facebook page for the Norwegian research group of the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis". The event concerned a panel on the Anthropocene idea, which was held Friday September 18th as part of the conference "Animals in the Anthropocene: Human–animal relations in a changing semiosphere". The Facebook ad campaign, targeted at the Stavanger region, turned out to reach much fewer than anticipated.

Interview on fur farming recommended almost 2.000 times on Facebook

The interview with professor in biology Dag Hessen and myself on fur farming, which was published online last week in the magazine Fri Tanke, has become a real hit on social media. To date the article has been recommended 1.900 times on Facebook.

To talk about animal ethics at meeting of the Green Party of Stavanger

On Monday 10th of November I will offer a lecture of sorts at an open meeting of the Green Party of Stavanger. The meeting starts at 6 pm. The title of my talk is "Et dyrs iboende verdi" [An animal´s inherent value]. I do this representing University of Stavanger and Minding Animals Norway.

The event has a Facebook page.

Program for climate debate on Tou Scene launched

Tou Scene in Stavanger, Norway, has launched the program for "Grunnlovsjubileet: Debatt oljeavhengighet og klimakrise" [Constitutional jubilee: Debate on oil dependency and climate crisis], which will take place October 14th, with me as one of the panelists (see also Facebook event page). The debate starts at 19.30.

"The ghosts in our machine" shown by MA Norway and sociological film club

On September 16th Minding Animals Norway co-arranged screening of the movie "The ghost in our machine" (2013) with Sosiologisk filmklubb, based at University of Oslo - see Facebook event page. Attendance was good, I hear. Rune Ellefsen introduced the movie.

Radikal portal recommending Minding Animals Norway Facebook page

A few days ago the Norwegian political web portal "Radikal portal" posted a list of 50 recommended Facebook pages, which included the Facebook page of Minding Animals Norway (see also homepage). The article, "50 Facebooksider for deg som vil forandre verden" [50 Facebook pages for those who want to change the world], was written by Wibeke Bergheim.

The Facebook page of Minding Animals Norway currently has 464 likes.

The process towards the 12th world congress of semiotics

The organisers of the 12th world congress of semiotics, which will take place in Sofia, Bulgaria, September 16-20th 2014, have chosen an unconventional approach to abstract submission - see the call for papers. Now and for some two further months there are discussions on possible topics on social media including Facebook. This is where I first proposed having a session on biosemiotic ethics (see below). The deadline for ordinary abstract submission to the organisers is June 30th 2014, but it is also possible to contact chairs of prospective sessions - including me - directly, well ahead of that. And there is some additional wiggle room too (see the call for papers).

Philosophy business: In minus

Yesterday I had to do my tax returns report (in Norwegian: selvangivelse). Since I am registered with a private (personal, actually) commercial company, Spør Filosofen ("Ask the Philosopher"), I simultaneously calculated the revenues, costs and profits (sic) of my company.

The outcome (for the year 2010):

Revenues, in total: 4.000 NOK
Costs, in total: 12.875,20 NOK
Profits: -8.875,20 NOK

In US dollars:

Revenues, in total: 748 USD
Costs, in total: 2.407 USD
Profits: -1.659 USD

Costs included maintaining a webpage, travel and accommodation in relation to promo-meetings, and advertising on Facebook and Google. Revenues originated from two assignments locally (in the Kristiansand area), one being a talk on the future of the global growth economy, the other a lecture and more for an international group of (exchange) students.

Some day I'll be rich. No kidding.

MAO meeting

Today we had another phone/internet meeting in the organizing committee of the Oslo Minding Animals event. No big news - except that today we launched our Facebook page.
