Google scholar: 1681 citations; 112 citations so far in 2026

According to my Google Scholar profile my research has to date attracted a total of 1.681 citations (+21 since August 31st). This includes 112 citations so far in 2026 (+16 since August 31st). My h-index remains 22 and my i10-index 48. As of now, with 3 months to go, 2026 is my 6th best year in terms of annual citations (on the next two spots, 2016 and 2020 both currently stand with exactly 100 citations each).

Today I have had an article writing day, with some 2900 words added to the manuscript while finishing (and then submitting) my book chapter "Ecosemiotic questions: Towards a comprehensive description of the complexity and creativity of life". This brings the number of writing days this Spring up to 62 including 35,5 article writing days.

This was the most productive writing day this Spring in terms of words written (not coincidentally, today was also my longest workday this Spring - before my summer vacation which starts tomorrow). Altogether I logged 15.864 words written in June, over 18,5 writing days (the most any month this Spring). This Spring I logged a total of 29.942 words written, which is more than any Spring since 2019 except 2020 and 2025.

Google Scholar: 507 citations, 16 so far in 2021; 52 texts cited

According to Google Scholar (cf. my profile), my work now has a total of 507 citations (+20 since February 5th but -10 since December 30th). This includes 16 citations in 2021. The 2020 total now stands at 68 citations (+7 since February 5th and +3 since December 30th), making 2020 my third best year to date.

"Umwelt transitions: Uexküll and environmental change" (2009) is now my most cited paper (43 citations), ahead of "Umwelt ethics" (2003, 42 citations). "The ethics of laying hen genetics" (2020) already has 11 citations, and is my 14-17th most cited paper (first author: Mia Fernyhough), with 6 citations in 2020 and 5 citations so far in 2021.

My i10-index is now 18 (+2 since February 5th but -2 since December 30th), meaning that 18 of my papers have been cited 10 times or more. M h-index is 13 (+1 since February 5th and equal to my h-index as of December 30th).

Altogether my Google Scholar profile lists 100 texts (which might include a few duplicates, non-scientific texts where my name appears etc.). Of these, 52 have been cited.

Google Scholar: 487 citations (-30)

According to Google Scholar I now have 487 citations. This is 30 less than as of December 30th, for some reason. 2020 now stands at 61 citations (-4 since December 30th), and 2021 at 2 citations (+2). My h-index is now 12 (-1) and my h10-index 16 (-4).

2020 work year redux

In 2020 I logged 2.790,5 work hours. This corresponds to 169% of a normal work year, and is the least I have worked since 2013, the first full year that I was a father. This was due to a combination of covid-19 circumstances and a month´s sick leave. My average work week was 53,4 hours, 5,5 hours less than in 2019.

I spent the most time on University of Stavanger tasks, ahead of research and "litterært" (book projects). The share of UIS tasks and "litterært" were both the highest in recorded memory (which goes back to 2009).

Google Scholar: 517 citations; 65 in 2020

According to Google Scholar (see my profile) my research has now attracted 517 citations (+5 since November 27th). 65 of these are from 2020 (+4 since November 27th), which means I right now have just as many citations in 2020 as I had in 2019. I had more in 2016 (93) and 2018 (72).

My i10-index remains 20 and my h-index 13.

#39,5 - 2020 totals: 94 writing days; 84.739 words written

Today I have had half an article writing day, with some 900 words written on the Preface of Semiotic agency: Science beyond mechanism, which I co-write with Alexei Sharov as second author. Final number of writing this autumn ends up at 39,5. This is more than the autumn of 2019, when I had 32 writing days. This Spring I had 54,5 writing days. In total in 2020 I thus had 94 writing days (a new record).

I have logged 39.578 words written this autumn, compared with ca. 27.000 words in the autumn of 2019 and 45.161 words this Spring. Year total for 2020: 84.739 words.

Faculty leadership meeting; action plan for research drafted and discussed

Today I attended the faculty leadership meeting at Faculty of social sciences. At the meeting we discussed my draft for action plan for research in 2020.

Autumn 26th article writing day; 40.000 words written so far this year

Today I have had this autumn´s 26th article writing day, with some 5 hours devoted to revision work on my article "What can be known about future Umwelten?". I deleted ca. 1.100 more words than I wrote; reworked the disposition for the paper; drafted a list of planned figures; and searched for software for making academic graphics.

At 26 article writing days so far this autumn, the semester´s number of article writing days already by far surpasses that of the Spring semester (16 article writing days - I also had several application writing days). Next Spring even more article writing days is planned.

Year totals to date: 42 article writing days; ca. 40.000 words written in article/chapter format (ca. 14.361 words in Spring, 25.906 to date this Autumn).

ISCB launches annual conference series - 2017 conference to be organised in Norway by me

The International Socity for Code Biology (ISCB), where I am a member of the Governing Board, is making plans for an annual conference series which will start in 2014. As can be seen from the partial overview below, I have been asked, and agreed, to organise the 4th conference in Norway, in 2017.

• 4th International Conference in Code Biology (2017): Stavanger*, Norway - organised by Morten Tønnessen
• 5th International Conference in Code Biology (2018): Braga, Portugal - organised by João Carlos Major
• 7th International Conference in Code Biology (2020): Stellenbosch, South Africa - organised by Jannie Hofmeyr

I will soon post on Why I joined the ISCB, a post which will make clear how I am relating to the current split in the biosemiotic community. For now, let it suffice to say that I will only regard the enterprise of the International Conferences in Code Biology as truly successful if they result in greater and not less interest in biosemiotics as a field. Consequently, a measure of their value will be whether they bring more people into biosemiotics, or simply contribute to fragmentation of the biosemiotic community. A further criterion for success is naturally how the ISCB conference series will affect the overall development of the discipline of biosemiotics in qualitative terms. 

At any rate, from 2014 onwards there will be two annual conference series in biosemiotics. The already established conference series is the International Gatherings in Biosemiotics (organised by the International Society for Biosemiotic Studies, ISBS), the 13th of which is to be held in Castiglioncello, Italy this June.
