Lectures, seminar given in Theory of science MA course

Today I have taught, for the first time, in the master course Theory of science (MSO120), which is offered by the University of Stavanger´s Department of social studies. The topic was introduction to philosophy of science and theory of science, and the teaching included 3 hours of lectures and a one hour seminar. Some 17 students attended.

This Autumn semester I am course coordinator (i.e., "emneansvarlig") for two courses, namely the abovementioned course Theory of science as well as Examen Philosophicum (Ex.Phil.) at Department of psychology.

Teaching on master level on autonomy and paternalism

Today I have lectured for close to three hours in a joint session for the MFAMILY class and Norwegian master students, with the topic autonomy and paternalism in political (and moral) theory.

Eli Glader´s video art exhibition "Vitner" opened

This Saturday, namely yesterday, Eli Glader´s video art exhibition "Vitner" [Witnesses] opened on Sølvberget Galleri, Stavanger, featuring a brochure with a text written by me ("Vitner"), and three lectures by me being held in February, March and April. I was present during the opening yesterday along with my family.

Guest-lecture on basic income organized

Yesterday I co-organized the guest lecture by Nanna Kildal (Rokkansenteret, Uni Research) on basic income at University of Stavanger´s Department of social studies, along with my colleague Eilef Meland. Some 100-150 people attended.

First lecture in Ex.Phil. given at Department of social studies

Today I gave the first lecture this Autumn in Examen Philosophicum at University of Stavanger's Department of social studies, for social work students. The topic was: What is philosophy and ethics?

Last day of teaching in Examen Philosophicum

On October 14th I taught for 4 hours at University of Stavanger's Department of health studies. This was the last session this semester of teaching in the bachelor-level course Examen Philosophicum. I summed up the whole course for 2 hours, in a lecture, and assisted students in group work for another 2 hours.

September 9th: Teaching; meeting on research project

This Monday I taught for 4 hours, in the bachelor course Examen Philosophicum. The course is designed for nursing students, but some 20 students in biological chemistry have joined the course this autumn. This week's teaching involved 4 x 45 minutes of lectures, with phenomenology and hermeneutics as topics.

Straight after class I met with my head of department and office manager to discuss the Estonian-Norwegian research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis".

Teaching at UiS, November 2012

On Wednesday November 7th I taught for 5 hours at University of Stavanger, in the master course for health science students "Philosophy of science and ethics". The lectures had been rescheduled to this date from October 17th due to my son's (expected) birth in October - my wife's due date was October 10th (and he was born the very same day).

January 1st: 20% position; 80% parental leave

I have updated my "Brief academic CV", amongst other things noting in point one that my position as Associate professor at University of Stavanger's Department of Health Studies 2012-2013 has been 25% (Spring 2012) > 100% (Autumn 2012) and is now 20% (Spring 2013). This semester I'll give the course Examen Philosophicum for the fourth time altogether (including once at University of Agder), and for the second time in the internet-based bachelor for nursing students.

Today, January 1st 2013, I further dwelve into a graded (80%) parental leave, to look after and spend time with my son Matias Laurits da Silva-Tønnessen (born October 10th 2012). My parental leave will last until June 24th.

Philosophy lecture at UiS I

On Monday 20th of August I gave the first lecture in Examen Philosophicum (introductory philosophy) this autumn semester (at University of Stavanger's Department of Health Studies), with some 150 nursing students present. I lectured for 4 x 45 minutes.

The topics were:

1. What is philosophy? Views on Man ("menneskesyn" in Norwegian). What does it mean to act like a nurse?
2. About the arrangements in Ex.phil.
3. What is science? What does it mean to think like a nurse?
4. Announcement of exam questions

Wolf lecture in Rendalen scheduled for June 6

My lecture in Rendalen (in the Norwegian county of Hedmark, a municipality just outside the wolf zone) has been scheduled for June 6th at 7-9 pm (this replaces a previous note). The topic of my talk is "Hvorfor konflikten rundt ulv og sau har blitt så hissig: Ulv og sau som symbol og realitet" [Why the conflict on wolves and sheep has become so /fierce/heated/: Wolves and sheep as symbol and reality]. Thomas Strømseth of Hedmark University College will give a lecture at the same event, on hunting dogs. The event will take place on Fagertun school, and is arranged by the project ROSAREN, which has been looking into local attitudes to large predators, and opportunities/consequences for local business.

Som utmarkskommune like utenfor ulvesonen har Rendalen en sentral plassering i debatten om norsk ulveforvaltning. I dette foredraget er temaet hvordan de mange kulturelle bildene av ulv og sau danner grunnlaget for debatten, og hvordan uenigheten i stor grad skyldes forskjellige natursyn. Både landskapet og opplevelsen av det er i endring i vår tid – og særlig vår endrede opplevelse av landskapet henger for en stor del sammen med utviklingen i norsk landbruk, som skaper frustrasjon og håpløshet i mange lokalmiljøer der småskala landbruk ennå er viktig. I løpet av foredraget skal vi blant annet se på natursynet til folk i Rendalen, og foredragsholderen vil også dele noen tanker om fremtiden.

Lecture on global species to be repeated autumn 2012

Last autumn I lectured about "Det menneskeskapte økologiske hierarki" [The human-made ecological hierarchy] in Guri Larsen's seminar Eco-global criminology at the University of Oslo, and today I was asked to give it again this autumn. 

The lecture, which will take place at UiO's Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, is now scheduled for October 31st (12-14).

Rendalen lecture: Title; date scheduled

My forthcoming lecture in Rendalen on Norwegian wolf management has been scheduled for May 8th. The title of my talk will likely (I am awaiting feedback) be "Hvorfor konflikten rundt ulv og sau har blitt så hissig: Ulv og sau som symbol og realitet" [Why the conflict on wolves and sheep has become so /fierce/heated/: Wolves and sheep as symbol and reality].

Lecture in Rendalen to be held in May

The lecture that I have earlier agreed to give in the municipality of Rendalen, on my analysis of Norwegian wolf management, will likely be held in May. Today I was asked what time I will be able to present. Specific date is still to be scheduled.

Oslo lecture on the global species: Title announced

As mentioned earlier I will give a lecture in Oslo October 19th, on the topic of the global species. The title has now been announced as "Det menneskeskapte økologiske hierarki" [The human-made ecological hierarchy - in Norwegian]. The lecture is part of the Master-level seminar "Økologisk kriminalitet, miljøskade og spesiesisme" [Ecological crime, environmental harm and speciesism] at Department of Criminology and Sociology of Law, University of Oslo.

My one man-company Spør Filosofen Tønnessen has now launched a new site, SpørFilosofen.no, where offers of lectures, readings, Q&A sessions etc. are described (in Norwegian).

Yesterday I was in a meeting with the event bureau Kjentfolk in Oslo, and agreed to start working with them.
