Change in EiC team for Biosemiotics taking effect

As of January 1st 2020, Timo Maran has been replaced by Filip Jaros as an Editor-in-Chief for Biosemiotics, along with Alexei Sharov and myself. Timo, who served as an Editor-in-Chief 2013-2019, will now be an editorial board member. I remain lead Editor-in-Chief, which I have been since the summer of 2018 (Alexei was lead Editor-in-Chief 2013-2018).

Today I have attended an introductory teleconference video call with two fellow Editors-in-Chief and our new Springer Publishing editor contact, Emi Kirilova.

This morning I took part in a teleconference call with our managing editor in Springer and my two fellow Editors-in-Chief, to establish contact and assess the status and prospects of our journal Biosemiotics.

Second Biosemiotics editorial published online: "Organisms reshape sign relations"

Our second editorial in Biosemiotics has appeared online, and is freely available as PDF. Reference:

Springer PR campaign for Biosemiotics - "Introducing new editorial team"

On August 28th, Springer conducted a PR campaign (by email) for the academic journal Biosemiotics, for which I am one of three Editors-in-Chief, with subject line "Introducing new editorial team" (i.e. the 2013-2018 team).

Selection panel of the Annual Biosemiotic Achievement Award appointed

The selection panel of the Annual Biosemiotic Achievement Award (see statutes) has now been appointed. Initially it counts the following members: Izabela Witkowska (Springer), Karel Kleisner (appointed by the Editors-in-Chief of Biosemiotics) and Don Favareau (appointed by the International Society for Biosemiotic Studies (ISBS)).

The first award will be given to author(s) of an article in the 2015 volume (nos. 1, 2, 3) of Biosemiotics. The winner will be announced in Biosemiotics #1/2016 and on the ISBS webpage.

First Biosemiotics editorial finished

In mid-February Alexei Sharov, Timo Maran and myself finished our first editorial as Editors-in-Chief of Biosemiotics. The editorial, entitled "Towards Synthesis of Biology and Semiotics", will appear in print in Biosemiotics 8(1), due in April. 

New and reformed Editorial Board of Biosemiotics

A couple of weeks ago the other Editors-in-Chief of Biosemiotics (Alexei Sharov and Timo Maran) and myself appointed the members of the new and revised Editorial board of the journal. The new Editorial Board (Advisory Board and Editorial Board have been merged) counts 28 members, compared with 41 members in the old boards combined.

We have intentionally aimed to arrive at a somewhat smaller editorial board. In the process we asked current (now old) members of the boards to signal whether they were interested in remaining in the Editorial Board, and invited new candidatures. All the appointed members of the new Editorial Board have a track record in biosemiotics.

The new list of Editorial Board members will soon appear on the journal homepage, and will also appear in printed issues from #3/2014 (December 2014) onwards.

The journal Biosemiotics to reorganize Editorial Board

The Springer journal Biosemiotics, for which I am one of three Editors-in-Chief, is in a process of reorganizing its Editorial Board. Candidates with documented competence in biosemiotics can contact the editors in order to be considered for the new and revised editorial board. Biosemiotics no. 6(3) - transitional issue

Returning home after having spent three days at the University of Stavanger, I found Biosemiotics 6(3) - December 2013 - in my mailbox. This is the first of two transitional double issues, edited by Marcello Barbieri (6(3) includes a Special Issue on "Origins of mind" guest-edited by Liz Stilwaggon Swan). On p. 2 I am still listed as a member of the Editorial Board, and further listed among the Editors-in-Chief: Marcello Barbieri, Timo Maran, Alexei Sharov and myself. From 7(2) forwards Biosemiotics is edited by Alexei, Timo and me.

Biosemiotics 6(3) furthermore includes two articles with my involvement, see below.
