Stepping down as Lead Editor-in-Chief of Biosemiotics at New Year

Some time ago I have informed the editorial board of Biosemiotics that at New Year I will be stepping down from the contracted position as lead Editor-in-Chief for. I have served as co-Editor-in-Chief since 2013, since the summer of 2018 as Lead Editor-in-Chief. The reason for me stepping down is that I will start being Head of Department at University of Stavanger´s Department of social studies January 1st (for the period 2021-2024). 

While Filip Jaros will also step down as Editor-in-Chief, Alexei Sharov will continue as Editor-in-Chief, and Yogi Hale Hendlin will start as new lead Editor-in-Chief. Yogi and Alexei are also in process with recruiting Assoctiate Editors, specifically for Asia, Afrika and Latin-America.

Lead Editor-in-Chief for Biosemiotics

The Editors-in-Chief of Biosemiotics, that is Alexei Sharov, Timo Maran and myself, have agreed that starting with issue 2/2018 (volume 11, issue 2) I will be the lead Editor-in-Chief. This involves main responsibility for communication, and a coordinating role. Editorial decision-making is joint among the three of us.

Biosemiotics 10(3) published, completing 10th volume

Biosemiotics volume 10, issue 3 has appeared. This issue includes an editorial co-edited by Timo Maran, Alexei Sharov and myself, "The first decade of Biosemiotics", and the fourth review article in the Biosemiotic Glossary Project, on the term "intentionality", by Don Favareau and Arran Gare.

Teleconference meeting on Biosemiotics

This morning I took part in a teleconference call with our managing editor in Springer and my two fellow Editors-in-Chief, to establish contact and assess the status and prospects of our journal Biosemiotics.

According to citation data from Thompson Web of Science, in 2016 Biosemiotics was the ranked as no. 8 in terms of Impact Factor (0,964) in the category "History & Philosophy of Science".

Biosemiotics special issue on "Constructive Biosemiotics" published

Biosemiotics no. 10(2) has been published. This issue is a special issue gest-edited by Tommi Vehkavaara and Alexei Sharov on "Constructive Biosemiotics".

Representing Biosemiotics at journals fair in Kaunas

Two days ago, on Wednesday afternoon, at the 13th world congress of semiotics (Kaunas June 26-30th), I participated in the semiotic journals fair, along with fellow co-editors of Biosemiotics Alexei Sharov and Timo Maran.

Record-high Impact Factor for Biosemiotics

The Impact Factor for Biosemiotics for 2016 has been released - a record high 0.964.

Biosemiotics 10(1) published; humanities manifesto reference

Biosemiotics volume 10, issue 1 has now been published. Online issue here. Among other texts it features "How can the study of the humanities inform the study of Biosemiotics?", co-authored by me.

Farina et al. featured in Springer campaign "Save the world"

An article published  by Biosemiotics, of which I am a Co-Editor-in-Chief, "The application of the acoustic complexity indices (ACI) to ecoacoustic event detection and identification (EEDI) modeling", is featured in a Springer campaign centered on articles that can "Change the world" (it was nominated by us editors).

In order to protect biological diversity, we need to recognize it and map it properly. This article impressively demonstrates how to map acoustic diversity.

Biosemiotics 9(3) published - "Multilevel semiosis"

Biosemiotics 9(3) has been published. This is a special issue entitled "Multilevel semiosis: Towards a heterarchical perspective" and guest-edited by Luis Emilio Bruni and Franco Giorgi. The issue has free trial access until January 31st.

Promotional email for Biosemiotics distributed

Our publisher Springer has just distributed a promotional email titled "Read the latest special issues and learn more about the Biosemiotic Award", or, in the online version "Biosemiotic Award and Special Issues". It includes links to the article that won the first Annual Biosemiotic Achievement Award, and to our two special issues published in 2016, plus a presentation of the three Editors-in-Chief. The special issues has free trial access until January 31st.

A Call For Papers has been issued for a special issue of Biosemiotics guest-edited by Andrew Winters and titled "Semiotic aspects of the Extended Synthesis" - see the Biosemiosis blog. Paper proposals are due January 31st.

Fourth biosemiotic glossary article on "semiotic threshold" - survey now online

The forth survey in the biosemiotic glossary project has just been released online, via Google Forms/Google Docs - here. The key term for the fourth survey is "semiotic threshold". The fourth review article in the project is being written and researched by Kalevi Kull and Claudio J. Rodríguez H.
