Featured in Khrono news story April 17th

Yesterday I discovered another Khrono news story featuring me, titled "Massiv kritikk mot ledelsens ønske om kutt i forskningstid" (Massive criticism of leadership´s desire for reduced research time) and featuring a citation from me as well as a photo (by Tord Paulson) and link to the news story featuring an interview with me published February 28th. This news story was published April 17th and was written by Hege Larsen. It mostly concerns hearing statements concerning the suggested work planning guidelines.

4 meetings and flower and photo event

Today I have attended the faculty leadership meeting, received flowers as a thank you for serving as chair of the board of the Centre for gender studies for the last two years, presented and discussed the proposed faculty strategy at a digital staff meeting at Norwegian School of Hotel Management, participated in a research administration meeting and presented and discussed the faculty´s research report for 2019 at the meeting of the board of the Faculty of social sciences.

UIS PR for Forskningsdagene

The University of Stavanger has published a news story titled "Kan marknaden redde klimaet, eller går verda til helvetet?" (Can the market save the climate, or does the world go to hell?) about UIS events during Forskningsdagene. A profile photo of me is included. The same photo is featured in the most recent UIS newsletter (distributed by email today).

UiS news story on my new Vice-Dean for Research position

A news story was published today on the intranet of the University of Stavanger, announcing that there is a "Ny prodekan for forsking ved SV" (New Vice-Dean of Research at the Faculty of Social Sciences).  The story includes an interview of and portrait of me, and the photo below. Both story and photo is by Karoline Reilstad.

Research visit to Tangen zoo conducted; to be zoo's research contact

Sunday to Tuesday this last week, March 9th to 11th, I have been conducting a research visit to Tangen zoo (formerly Amadeus zoo) in Stange in Hedmark, Norway. I was hosted by zoo owner Runar Næss and my research colleague in the research project "Animals in changing environments: Cultural mediation and semiotic analysis" Laura Kiiroja, who currently resides in the zoo.

During the visit I agreed to be a research contact for Tangen zoo, a role which will involve being a scientific advisor when it comes to research carried out in the park. Currently the zoo houses socialized foxes, and they are working to get permission to hold socialized wolves too. This would likely involve long-term observations of some sort from my side - some ideas are brewing, but some of these depend on further research funding.

I got to see most of the animals close-up, including the two camels, an iguana, a number of snakes (constrictors), several curious silver monkeys, a zebra, and a not very friendly alligator. Throughout the visit I took photos and filmed - part of this material might be used for the perception studies I will soon carry out with Paul Thibault.

Humanimals paper posted in the blog of Minding Animals Norway

My paper "Animal and Eve: How representations of wolves and sheep are used to construct human identities", presented at the workshop Humanimals: Examining Histories and Productions of Animal-Human Relationships (Oslo, September 26-27 2013), has now been posted in the blog of Minding Animals Norway - see here. Includes three photos from my field work.

The paper (9pp) is also available in PDF format, under my Academia.edu profile. 

Minding Animals Norway launches poster and brochures

Minding Animals Norway has last month produced and started distributing a 4-page brochure (in two versions with different cover photos) and an A3 poster - see below. While the poster headline ("Oh well, whatever, nevermind?") is Nirvana-inspired, the brochures feature a quote by Mikal Rode (1908-1993) - here in English translation:

When man denies his kinship with animals, it tends to be in the form of barking, hissing or growling.
