New, healthier email routine off-work

Since work this autumn commenced after the summer holidays, I have had a new afternoon routine, in-between getting home from work and putting kids to bed, not checking email in this period. On days where I write on my novel, or write (only) on my climate change book in the evening, nor do I check email in the evening, meaning that these days I do not check email between 4.30 pm and next morning.

Meeting; children at work

Today I participated in - and (in the absence of the Dean) chaired - the faculty´s leadership group meeting, focused on our ongoing establishment of research schools. Two of my kids were nearby, since kindergarten has planning day today.

Contractual meeting at real estate agent

Today I took part in a contractual meeting at a real estate agent in relation to the house we have bought in Stavanger. We will move in late November - at which point I will stop commuting, after 5 years in that business.

Work meeting on chapter on family policies and liberalism

Today I have taken part in a work meeting where a colleague at University of Stavanger´s Department of social studies working a joint chapter on family policies and liberalism.

Application for parental leave sent

Today I have posted my application for parental leave in relation to the birth last autumn of our twins Alexander and Cecilie da Silva-Tønnessen. All I have had so far is two weeks straight after birth. I now apply for a further 21 weeks or so, with some of it taken as graded parental leave (part-time, combined with part-time work). If the application is approved as submitted, I will start part-time parental leave April 1st and have full-time parental leave August 1st to October 26th (the latter portion of leave will be rearranged if I get a position as Head of department at University of Stavanger).

To co-write article on family topic

I have agreed to co-write a chapter with Svein Erik Tuastad for an anthology to be published in relation to the 25 year anniversary of University of Stavanger´s Department of social studies. The topic will be the (philosophy of the) balance between family and individual rights in child welfare contexts.
