Today I have had what ended up as half an article writing day, with a few words added to the Salongen article I am writing on longtermism, and some key readings done. This brings the number of writing days so far this Spring up to 16, including 11 article writing days.

Academic readings 2024; most read authors

In 2024 I have logged that I have read some 6172,5 pages of academic texts. This is quite a bit more than the 4546 pages I logged in 2023, and a good step towards earlier highs. Apart from students I supervise at ph.d., MA or BA level, the authors I read the most of included Jakob von Uexkülll, Jason Hickel, Dag Hessen, Philip Goff, Alice Crary and Lori Gruen.

Text on the evolutionary origin of Umwelt featured in Middlesex University Reading group session

My brief commentary article "The Evolutionary Origin(s) of the Umwelt. Biosemiotics" is included in this Spring´s readings for the reading group “Signs in Nature” at Middlesex University, along with Jablonka and Ginsburg´s Target article "Learning and the Evolution of Conscious Agents". This will happen in the session "Consciousness and Umwelt", which takes place Friday April 19th online.

Yesterday, while traveling to Thessaloniki, Greece, I had half an article writing day by reading while flying, related to my article "Wasted GDP in the USA".

Today I have had half an article writing day, with some 100 words added to my wasted growth article in revision and to my CCS book manuscript altogether, and readings done. Number of writing days this Spring is up to 44,5.

Minor change in MEM110 course description

A couple of weeks ago or so I conducted a minor revision of the course description for the international master course "Welfare state and welfare policy" (MEM110) for next Spring (change of readings).

This last year, in 2014, I read some 5.690 pages of academic literature (with author known), according to my notes (not much at all). This is significantly below the 7,096 pages I read in 2013, and what I have read the last few preceding years.

This last year, in 2013, I read some 7,096 pages of academic literature (with author known), according to my notes (not so much). This is not much different from the 7,310 pages I read in 2012.

As in 2012, Jakob von Uexküll was the scholar I read most "about" - this time ahead of Aristotle, Kant, Husserl and Gadamer (top 5).

According to my notes, in 2012 I read some 7,310 pages of academic writings (mostly official publications only - in addition I've for instance read some 400 exam papers, totalling perhaps 3,000 pages). Most readings were directly related to my teaching, editing or writing. For the year as a whole Jakob von Uexküll was the scholar most read "about".

Being the number-prone nerd that I am, I regularly count (and classify) my work hours, and what I read in an academic context.

Work hours
While a normal Norwegian work year is approximately 1650 hours, I worked 2833 hours in 2009 (172%) and a record 3029 hours in 2010 (184% - + 196 hours). In 2010, I classified 67,8% of these work hours as 'Academic work', 12,6% as 'Writing' and 19,7% as 'Other work' , which includes my attempts to commercialize my competence as a philosopher (I will spare you for the details - finer categories).

Readings
I took note of reading 8.918 pages in 2009, and 9,392 pages in 2010 (+474), altogether 18.310 pages 2009-10. Readings in the second half of 2010 represented 275 authors ('written by') and 240 thinkers ('written about'). Top ten for the latter:
