To discuss free will in animals at "Wonderful world" festival

I have been scheduled to introduce and take part in the panel discussion "Har dyr fri vilje - med hvilke rettigheter?", along with Norun Haugen and Martin Lee Mueller, on June 3rd, as part of the philosophy and science festival "Wonderful world", which is held in Stavanger, Norway June 1st to 4th.

Chronicle on fish happiness linked to under NGO Aftenposten chronicle

On October 28th Siri Martinsen, head of the Norwegian NGO "NOAH - for animal rights" had a chronicle published in Aftenposten entitled "Ingen dyr skal måtte leve i bur" [No animal should have to live in cages]. One of the three links provided after the chronicle text online (under Les også, Read also) is to a chronicle written by Tore Kristiansen and me, "Fiskelykke?" [Luck in fishing/fish happiness?], here presented as "Levende fisk fårstrupe og mage skåret opp uten at de er bedøvet" ["Live fish gets throat and stomach cut open without being sedated".

Norwegian Animal Protection Day 2015 sponsored by REMA 1000

Animal protection award ceremony in Oslo attended

Monday evening I attended the award event of Dag S. Stiansens stiftelse, Stiansen-prisen, at Grand Hotel in Oslo, on behalf of Minding Animals Norway (along with three others). NORECOPA, working for replacement, reduction and refinement of animal experiments, got this year's award. Minding Animals Norway and other receivers of project funding (MAN got funding for the Norwegian Animal Ethics Conference 2014) from the foundation were also celebrated, and given flowers.

HAS anthology sold by animal rights NGO

The Norwegian Human-Animal Studies anthology Hvem er villest i landet her? Råskap mot dyr og natur i antropocen, menneskets tidsalder [Who is wildest in this country here? Brutality towards animals and nature in the Anthropocene, the age of Man], for which I am one of three editors, is being sold by NOAH - for dyrs rettigheter (NOAH - for animal rights), a Norwegian animal rights NGO, in their webshop.

New work title for animal philosophy collection

The forthcoming collection edited by John Hadley and Elisa Aaltola, which was formerly titled Animal meta-ethics: New directions in animal philosophy, now has a new work title: Animal rights and philosophy: The next generation. I am involved with the chapter "Beyond sentience: Biosemiotics as foundation for animal and environmental ethics", co-authored with Jonathan Beever.

Minding Animals International (MAI)

I have gotten in touch with Minding Animals International, the people behind the 2009 Newcastle/Australia conference and the forthcoming 2012 conference in the same series to be arranged in Utrecht. Concretely, I have been added to the MA Email Network.

MAI aims to promote integration/development of contact between researchers in the field of animal studies on one hand and advocacy groups promoting environmentalism, animal rigths etc. on the other. Importantly, their vision is to support attempts to integrate the environmental movement and animal rights groups - though MAI's work is in the main theoretical/scholarly. A crucial task!
