OECD High-Level Policy Forum "New Frontiers for Social Policy: Investing in the Future" attended; question asked in panel on Climate change and social policy

Yesterday I attended the OECD High-Level Policy Forum "New Frontiers for Social Policy: Investing in the Future" at the OECD headquarters in Paris. The Policy Forum is followed by a Ministerial Meeting on Friday February 14th.

At the Policy Forum, I got to ask a question towards the end of the fourth panel which had the theme "Climate change and social policy", which can be seen in recording here.

My question read like this: 

“I´m Morten Tønnessen, and I am professor of philosophy from the University of Stavanger in Norway. And research by Daniel O´Neill and colleagues has shown that no country at all currently meets the basic welfare needs for its citizens while simultaneously having a material resource use that is environmentally sustainable. So no country is a good enough role model currently. How do we achieve high welfare levels without having too high material resource use in terms of environmental impact?”

My question is heard at 43m35s-44m17s. This is the third OECD event I have attended - earlier I have attended the 2018 High-Level Policy Forum on Social Policy in Montreal, Canada, the second such Policy Forum (I have thus attended two of three of the OECD´s Policy Forums on social policy). The same year I also attended the 6th OECD World Forum on Statistics, Knowledge and Policy, held in Incheon, South Korea. 

This was the first time I visited the OECD headquarters.

Descriptive phenomenology chapter published as part of "Open Semiotics"

The 4 books comprising Open Semiotics, edited by Amir Biglari, have now been published, according to the publisher, L´Harmattan´s website. My chapter "Umwelt theory for practitioners: Semiotic guidelines for application in a more-than-human descriptive phenomenology" appears in volume 4, "Life and its extensions".

MC meeting; leaving Paris

Today I attended the second half of the Management Committee meeting of the COST action GroupHouseNet, at FIAP in Paris (I am a deputy representative for Norway). I was also there for a planned Working Group meeting which for most of those present did not materialize due to concerns over our trips home given the ongoing political strike affecting pubic transportation.

Laying hen ethics article presented at final GroupHouseNet congress in Paris

Yesterday I presented our article "The ethics of laying hen genetics" at the Final Congress og the COST action "Synergy for preventing damaging behavior in group housed pigs and chickens" (Grouphousenet), at FIAP in Paris. 15 minutes of fame. Some 100 people from 20+ countries attended the congress.

I am scheduled to present our paper "The ethics of laying hen genetics" at the Final Dissemination Meeting of the COST action "GroupHouseNet", which takes place in Paris on December 10th. The paper is co-written with Mia Fernyhough (first author), Mike Toscano, Christine Nicol and Teun van de Braak - and will shortly appear Open Access in Journal of agricultural and environmental ethics.

Finally in Paris for inequality conference

I have finally arrived in Paris, at the global inequality conference of the Paris School of Economics. The very first World Inequality Report was launched this morning - but I missed that, since my flight yesterday from Stavanger to Oslo was delayed some 2 hours, making me miss my next flight, for Paris. But now, via Stockholm, I am here at last.

I have decided to attend the First WID.world conference, on global economic inequality, after all, even not presenting a paper. I see the conference, which is held in Paris December 14-15th, as very relevant for the research I am now starting on into the relation between prosperity and welfare.

Scheduled to present in Paris May 11th

I have been scheduled to present on May the 11th at 16.00 to 17.15 during the research seminar "Merleau-Ponty og gestaltpsykologien" [Merleau-Ponty and the gestalt psychology], organised by Ståle Finke (NTNU) and to be held at Centre Universitaire de Norvège à Paris (CUNP). My presentation will be of a chapter  in Kurt Goldstein´s The organism.

Code biology conference: General assembly, roundtable attended

On Friday May 23rd, while at the 1st International Conference in Code Biology (Paris, May 21-23), I attended the first General Assembly of the International Society of Code Biology (ISCB) - which was very brief (approving financial report and formally also the venue for the second conference) - and the concluding roundtable discussion (cf. programme).

Afternoon session chaired at 1st code biology conference

On Thursday 22nd of May I chaired the afternoon session at the First International Conference in Code Biology in Paris (apart from half an hour where Jannie Hofmeyr kindly stepped in for me). Some 30 people attended. Speakers included Han-liang Chang, Louis Goldberg, Liz Swan, Candice Shelby, Anna Aragno and João Carlos Major.
