Writing - plans vs. reality

I did not get to have a writing day today - as sometimes happens, due to an overwhelming workload. However, I have reassessed my writing plans for the time leading up to and following directly after my summer holidays. Unfortunately my pet article "Wasted growth" will have to wait some more, until over the summer, for completion. Before the summer holidays I have to prioritise writing projects with agreed deadlines (of which there are three or four depending on how you count, including one chapter with deadline shortly after the summer holidays).

Manuscript for special issue on biosemiotic ethics submitted

Yesterday, or more precisely this night, I sent off the full manuscript of the special issue on biosemiotic ethics to the editors of Zeitschrift für Semiotik, on behalf of myself, Jonathan Beever and Yogi Hendlin, my fellow guest editors. Altogether 11 texts totaling some 83.000 words.

Extended deadline for politics and animals chapter

I have been allowed an extended deadline for my book chapter "A critical reading of mentions of animals in political party programs". The new deadline is March 31st.

KAJAK, the Estonian Centre for Environmental History at Tallinn University Institute of History, in cooperation with the University of Tartu and Rachel Carson Center for Environment & Society (LMU Munich) and with the support of European Society for Environmental History are pleased to announce a three-day graduate seminar in environmental history hosted in the Estonian countryside.

The seminar will explore animals as historical agents and as a lens through which to understand past environmental transformations. A workshop on popular science writing will also take place and the summer school will end with an open roundtable on animals assisting humans. The graduate seminar aims to gather 15 graduate (and post-doctoral) students together with junior and senior scholars.

Bachelor thesis meeting; submission deadline decided

On Tuesday November 25th I attended a meeting coordinating work concerning the bachelor theses in social work and child welfare respectively, research methodology included. In connection with the meeting I had prepared a memo to be sent to the general manager of Department of social studies, concerning deadline for submission of bachelor thesis. After the meeting I sent it signed with my own name only. The deadline for submission of bachelor thesis was later - today - specified by our Head of department to May 13th 2015, as we suggested after our meeting Wednesday.

Extended abstract deadline for Minding Animals 3 (Delhi 2015)

The deadline for abstract submission to the third conference of Minding Animals International (MAI), to be held in Delhi, India, January 2015, has been extended from August 15th to September 19th - see announcement.

Final deadline for Sofia paper proposals August 15th

The ordinary deadline for abstract submissions to the 12th World Congress of Semiotics (Sofia, Bulgaria September 16-20) was June 30th and has thus passed. However, until August 15th it is still possible to submit abstracts (including to my session "Biosemiotic ethics", scheduled for September 19th), though placement in the desired session can no more be guaranteed.

"Beyond sentience" article due November 1st

The article "Beyond sentience: Biosemiotics as foundation for animal and environmental ethics", which I am co-writing with Jonathan Beever, will be due November 1st, according to our recent email exchange with the editors of the book project Animal meta-ethics: New directions in animal philosophy.
