Input on ethical guidelines for animal experiments

Today I have contributed to the consultation response (høringsuttalelse) of Norway´s Council for animal ethics in relation to ethical guidelines for animal experiments developed by Norway´s National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT).

Rector´s petroleum/strategy chronicle listed in ethics committees´weekly media recap

The chronicle by rector of University of Stavanger Marit Boyesen which was written in reply to my chronicle on university strategy and the ethics of petroleum research is listed in the weekly media recap of the National Committees for Research Ethics in Norway (week 45).

NENT to arrange open meeting in Oslo on the research ethics of petroleum research

Norway's National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT) has announced the programme of an open meeting on the research ethics of petroleum research, "Petroleumsforskning og etikk: Hvor går universitetene nå?" [Petroleum research and ethics: Where do the universities go from here?]. The meeting will take place at Litteraturhuset in Oslo on October 23rd at 12-16. Marit Boyesen, rector of University of Stavanger, and Peter Haugan are among the participants.

Mentioned six times in NENT media coverage document

Norway's National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT) has published a PDF document on media coverage of the debate on the research ethics of petroleum research (via Opoint presseklipp). Totalling 324 pages, the document contains 267 news stories (including letters to the editor etc.) from the period November 22nd 2012 to August 28th 2014.

All Norwegian universities asked to map and explain petroleum research

In response to the debate on the research ethics of petroleum research, where I have taken part as one of many, all Norwegian universities were asked by Norway's National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT) to map their petroleum research and to explain how they relate to research ethics in this context (see article in Forskerforum, "NTNU forsvarer oljeforskningen" [NTNU defends oil research], March 18th).

Disappointingly apologetic statements from CEO of RCN on petroleum research

In an article entitled "Petroleumsforskning har en rolle å spille" [Petroleum research has a role to play], the CEO of Research Council of Norway, Arvid Hallén, gives a number of somewhat apologetic statements after the statement issued recently by Norway's National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT) on the research ethics of petroleum research. Hallén basicly claims that the Research Council of Norway's research policy is already in line with NENT's statement. He thus does not go into any of the difficult questions raises by NENT's statement. That is disappointing.

Gunnar Kvåle cites research ethics chronicle

In a commentary article entitled "Er norsk petroleumsforskning etisk forsvarlig?" [Is Norwegian petroleum research ethically justifiable?], published in the online magazine Energi og Klima, Professor emeritus Gunnar Kvåle (University of Bergen) cites what "Haugan og fem andre forskere fra universitetene i Bergen, Stavanger, Oslo, NTNU og Tromsø" [Peter M. Haugan and five other researchers from the universities of Bergen, Stavanger, Oslo, Tromsø and Norwegian University of Science and Technology] wrote in a recent chronicle. This refers to "Forskning for klimavennlig omstilling" [Research for climate-friendly restructuring], which I co-wrote along with Kvåle and others.

Rector comments on NENT statement in UiS news article; article links to Utopisk Realisme

In response to this Wednesday's statement of Norway's National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT) on the research ethics of petroleum research, the rector of University of Stavanger, Marit Boyesen, has yesterday issued comments in form of a UiS news article ("UiS-rektor ønsker NENT-uttalelsen velkommen" [UiS rector welcomes NENT statement]). The newsarticle links to several news articles on the NENT statement, and also to my blog post in my Norwegian language blog Utopisk Realisme,  "Hvordan vil rektor følge opp NENTs forskningsetiske vurdering av petroleumsforskning?" [How will rector follow up NENT's research ethical consideration of petroleum research?]. Among other things Boyesen says that the NENT report will be included in the university's future strategy work.

National Committee for Research Ethics still considering research ethics of petroleum research

Norway's National Committee for Research Ethics in Science and Technology (NENT) decided on a much anticipated meeting Monday this week (April 28th) that their treatment of research ethics in the context of petroleum research will continue until June, when they will hold an extraordinary meeting to conclude on the subject. A statement will appear in mid-June.

I have been one of the researchers raising this debate. Due to my blog backlog I have not yet posted news on most of my activities (a chronicle by me and one co-written, a few interviews, etc.) in this context, but I hope to do so soon.
